If you want to keep your television but don’t like it being the center of attention or detracting from the aesthetic of your home then a pop up TV cabinets may be what you are looking for. These cabinets allow you to tuck your television away in a piece of furniture where it is hidden when not in use and pulled up by remote control when ready for viewing. They are perfect for living rooms, bedrooms and even atop electric fireplaces.
There are several ways to build a pop up TV cabinet but they all start with the same basic frame. This frame is built using 2×4’s and plywood sheets which can then be covered with whatever you desire for the outside of your cabinet. The most popular covering is hardwood flooring which is easy to work with and comes in a variety of colors, materials and finishes to match your decor. Other options include melamine or particle board which can be painted or stained to match your decor.
Regardless of what you decide to use for the outside of your TV lift cabinet there are some important details that need to be taken into account. First, you will need to know what VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) height your television needs to be to fit in the cabinet. This will determine the size of the cabinet you need to build as well as the type of lifting mechanism to purchase.
The next step is to cut the sides, bottom and back of the cabinet to the appropriate sizes. This can be done with a circular saw or table saw. Make sure you have a good set of blades and that the saw is in top shape. It is also a good idea to have a couple of extra pieces of each material on hand in case you make any mistakes during the cutting process.
Once you have all the pieces of wood cut to size it is time to assemble them. Attach the sides to the bottom of the cabinet using wood glue and pocket screws. Once the side are attached attach the back of the cabinet. Finally attach the top that will rise with the TV using two 12′ piano hinges.
Installing your TV lift should take only a few minutes. Follow the directions that came with your equipment to ensure it is mounted correctly. Once you have everything installed sit back and enjoy your new pop up TV cabinet!
