Hillhaven was spun off from National Medical in 1990 and became an independent investor-owned operator of nearly 400 nursing homes, 22 pharmacies, and 24 retirement housing centers in the United States. Its management was determined to improve the quality of care it provided by establishing operating and financial criteria for its facilities that would be measured and monitored by external auditors.

In the early years of its independence, Hillhaven performed well in many respects. However, it was not without its share of controversy. Negative reviews often focused on a lack of adequate care, resulting in poor hygiene and the deterioration of residents’ health, or even death.

As the company began to see its profits dwindle in the mid-1990s, it reorganized and began shedding underperforming assets. Eventually, it was merged into Vencor, a Kentucky-based operator of 35 long-term-care hospitals with $400 million in annual revenues. hillhaven
